October 2018 - Reminder - streamlining ethical review pathways

A reminder that research projects conducted at more than 1 Victorian public hospital site must be reviewed by a Reviewing HREC.  The Eye and Ear may then accept the ethical approval of that Reviewing HREC and, following site specific assessment, may then issue Research Governance Authorisation for the Eye and Ear.

A reminder that studies granted ethical approval by a Reviewing HREC in another state can be submitted to the  approved in another state can be submitted to the Eye and Ear, who may then accept the ethical approval of that Reviewing HREC and, following site specific assessment, may then issue Research Governance Authorisation for the Eye and Ear.

Single site projects at the Eye and Ear Hospital, or multi-site research projects involving our research partners, private clinics or other organisations that do not have their own HREC should continue to submit the ethics applications to the Eye and Ear HREC.

University of Melbourne research teams are reminded that (as requested by the University of Melbourne)

  • University research projects that do not involve Eye and Ear patients, staff or resources should be submitted to the University of Melbourne HRECs

  • University research projects that do involve Eye and Ear patients, staff or resources should be approved by a Reviewing HREC or the Eye and Ear HREC and then registered with the University of Melbourne Research Ethics and Integrity Office

The aim is to facilitate research by reducing duplicate ethical review and streamlining governance authorisation
