My Health Record

The My Health Record, previously known as the Personally Controlled Electronic Health Record (PCEHR), is a shared electronic summary of an individual’s health information.

It contains documents such as:

  • Discharge summaries
  • Referral letters
  • Correspondence
  • Medication records
  • Immunisation records
  • Pathology and radiology reports

It does not replace medical records that have already been created but provides a convenient and secure place to store health information to share with health providers.

What are the benefits of a My Health Record?

The My Health Record system is intended to improve the health of patients by enabling more efficient communication with their healthcare providers.

Other benefits include:

  • Personal control over who sees your My Health Record and which documents it contains
  • Healthcare professionals can access the information in your My Health Record in a medical emergency to provide the best possible treatment and care
  • You will not need to remember all of your medical history every time you visit a healthcare practitioner as it will be available in one place
  • Prevention of unnecessary repeated tests as the results will be available in your record

How secure is the information uploaded to My Health Record?

The My Health Record system has many safeguards in place to protect the sensitive information stored and to maintain the privacy of individuals. Some of these include the same kind of encryption used in banks, firewalls to block unlawful access, secure login mechanisms, and audit trails of access.

Access to your My Health Record can also be personally controlled by changing the privacy settings to only allow certain healthcare providers access or by restricting which documents may be viewed.

Unauthorised access to a My Health Record is punishable by law and significant penalties apply to those who deliberately misuse the system.

How is the Eye and Ear involved?

The Eye and Ear Hospital began uploading discharge summaries in late 2018 for those patients who have a My Health Record and provide consent.
