Singapore 2015: “Think global: See local. Patients at the heart of all we do.”

By: Dr Caroline Clarke, Executive Director Performance and Improvement

In May a contingent of Eye and Ear staff visited Singapore for the 9th annual meeting of the World Association of Eye Hospitals. The Eye and Ear is one of the founding members of this organisation along with other specialist eye centres including Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, Rotterdam Eye Hospital and St Erik Eye Hospital in Sweden. The annual conference is an excellent opportunity to network with international colleagues, share challenges with other eye centres of excellence and hear of some of their innovative ideas and solutions. Dr Kristen Wells and Dr Caroline Clarke presented papers on the improvements we have undertaken in the Emergency Department and Rebecca Power presented some of the excellent work undertaken at the hospital on Patient Centred Care and consumer involvement.

There were a number of presentations on the use of technology in improving the delivery of eye care, including the use of a portable slit lamp and technological solutions to support both telemedicine and simulation for educational purposes. We also heard how other eye centres are using innovative workforce models in areas of high demand for example in the management of glaucoma.

We had an opportunity to visit the Singapore National Eye Centre which was celebrating its 25th anniversary. We were able see some of the solutions they have introduced to manage their patient flow and improve their patient experience, and look at how some of these may be relevant in our new hospital.
