Volunteer profile: Norma

March 18, 2015

After seeing an advertisement in the Brunswick local paper, Norma Phillips started volunteering at the Eye and Ear on June 29, 1984.

“I called Aline Darke [past president, Council of Auxiliaries] when I saw the ad in the paper. She asked me if I’d like to go into the Eye and Ear canteen or the Op Shop, I said I didn’t care so Aline just put me in the canteen,” Norma recalls.

“I’ve shifted around a bit but I’m still here, at the hospital - it’s 31 years but it doesn’t seem all that long!”

Working in sales before her retirement, Norma says volunteering was the logical thing to do.

“I had given up work and I had nothing else much to do, so I thought it would be a good idea to volunteer here at the hospital.”

Norma says she enjoys meeting and talking to different people. Interestingly, while many people come and go in the busy hospital Norma notes that since 1984 she has only bumped into three people she knows while volunteering.

At the Volunteer Thank You Lunch last year, Norma was recognised for 30 years of service, a tremendous effort for which the hospital is very thankful.
