With the recent announcement of the 2020 Australia Day Honours, the Eye and Ear was delighted to learn that three of this year’s awardees have connections to the Eye and Ear: Professor Robert Shepherd AM, Dr Catherine Brown and Dr David Workman.

Former Wagstaff Fellow at the Eye and Ear, Professor Robert Shepherd was recognised for his significant service to biomedical research, and to education. He was also previously the Director at the Bionics Institute, and during his time there was part of the cochlear development team and was involved with the Bionic Eye Project.

Dr Catherine Brown was awarded an OAM for her service to the community through charitable organisations. She served as Deputy Board Chair of the Eye and Eye for nine years, and is the current CEO of the Lord Mayor's Charitable Foundation where she works on issues such as affordable housing, sustainable Melbourne, the health impacts of climate change, social cohesion and youth unemployment.

Also awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia was Dr David Workman, former ophthalmologist here at the hospital, for his service to ophthalmology, and to international relations. Dr Workman worked at the Eye and Ear for over ten years, taking on various roles during his time here, including, Head of Clinic, Head of Clinic at our Maroondah Hospital Spoke service and Chairman of Senior Medical Staff.

It is fantastic to see their services getting the recognition they deserve. Huge congratulations to you, from all at the Eye and Ear!
