For GPs and other referrers
Advice to GPs and referrers from The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital during the COVD-19 pandemic here.
The Eye and Ear like all health services is adapting our working model during the COVID-19 Pandemic to minimise the spread of infection and preserve our PPE. With elective surgery slowly coming back on line please see some guidance below for GPs, Optometrists and other referrers.
Emergency Department
We are operational 24/7 for eye and ENT emergencies. We would advise that non urgent issues like ear wax be dealt with locally.
Referrals
Please refer patients to the Eye and Ear using the regular processes, be advised like all health services the waiting periods may be extended.
Specialist Clinics
Many specialist clinic appointments are being managed through telehealth or telephone consultations. Urgent cases are still being seen in clinic. Patients are notified by telephone if there is a change to their appointment.
Elective surgery
All Category 3 and non-urgent Category 2 surgeries had been postponed. Patients will be advised on of new surgery dates by telephone when elective surgery fully resumes.

At the Eye and Ear, we have enjoyed a long-standing and valued relationship with Victoria’s General Practitioners, going back almost 150 years. Many GPs have completed electives in our hospital as students. As our services have become more specialised, with greater reach, we have a GP Liaison Officer to help make communication between the hospital and local GPs as easy and effective as possible. To contact our GP Liaison Officer, email gpliaison@eyeandear.org.au.
Our quick reference phone directory for GPs has some useful contacts and phone numbers for GPs seeking information about their patients’ status on the surgical waiting list and outpatient appointment waiting list and to request letters about patients seen at the hospital.
Our latest GP newsletter is available now, download a copy here.
