Eye and ENT Emergency Education 2020

The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital is pleased to offer the following education sessions in 2020 for FACEMs and Emergency Medicine Trainees wishing to fine tune or refresh their skills:

Please note the April and June practical sessions have been cancelled due to the  COVID-19 pandemic. The decision on whether the 2 day September seminar goes ahead will be notified in due course.

Practical Eye and ENT Skills (advanced small group workshops)

- Saturday 13th June 2020

The number of places for each workshop is limited to 12 participants per session. The ENT session will run 9am-11.30am followed by the Eye session 12.30pm-3.30pm.

In these workshops we will have small group instruction and demonstration by Specialists and Registrars co teaching.  The sessions will be hands on, and will be very instructive in a supportive environment.

The Eye workshop will include practice of eyelid eversion, measurement of corneal depth and size of lesions using slit lamp, technique for removal of corneal foreign body, assessment of the anterior chamber, measurement of intraocular pressure, testing for relative afferent pupil defect and retinal examination, and assessment of eye trauma.

The ENT workshop will include ENT examination, use of tuning forks, pneumatic otoscopy, flexible nasoendoscopy, removal of ear, nose and throat foreign bodies, management of epistaxis, and assessment and management of vertigo.

Annual two day Eye and ENT Emergency Seminar (with lectures and practical session) Seminar is currently booked out. We are taking details for wait list only.

- Thursday 3rd September 2020 (Eye day) & Friday 4th September 2020 (ENT day)

The number of places at the seminar is limited to 45 participants per day. This seminar includes a combination of lectures provided by specialists in the field, along with a small practical component in slit lamp use and ENT examination.

Eye Emergency Day Topics include – Ophthalmic History Taking, Corneal Emergencies, Eye Trauma and Sudden Loss of Vision.

ENT Emergency Day Topics will include – The ENT Examination, Otological Emergencies, Epistaxis, Airway Emergencies and Faciomaxillary Trauma.

In addition, there will be an optional Fellowship practice examination on Eye / ENT emergencies for pre fellowship trainees.

These events offer the opportunity for participants to draw upon the expertise of our colleagues in Ophthalmology and ENT surgery as their specialties relate to your practice of Emergency Medicine.

Attendance at the September seminar is not a prerequisite for attending the practical skills sessions.

Places will be filled as each registration and payment is received.
