Volunteering - Brianne

September 19, 2018

Eye and Ear volunteer Brianne knows from experience that unfamiliar environments and experiences can cause some anxiety. Brianne is a fourth year pharmacy student originally from Guangzhou, China. She moved to Australia five years ago, without fluent English. Since then she has successfully completed four years of study, as well as placements in hospitals. For the last two years, Brianne has volunteered in our Day Surgery at Eye and Ear on the Park. She enjoys helping reduce the stress patients experience, but as Brianne explains, it’s a two-way street.

"Volunteering has been great for me to gain confidence in talking to strangers and has really helped with my English. I like helping deal with patients’ anxieties and make them feel more comfortable."

In addition to English, Brianne speaks Mandarin and Cantonese and will often chat to patients in their native tongue.

"If people are worried I like being able to help make them feel at ease.”
