ENT ServicesDepartment of Otolaryngology The Department of Otolaryngology at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital is the largest Otolaryngology Department in Victoria and is the base for the Cochlear Implant programme in Australia. The University of Melbourne Department of Otolaryngology is based at the Hospital and Professor Graeme Clark is Head of that Department. Professor Clark was responsible for the invention and development of the Cochlear Implant device and an active programme is undertaken at the Hospital. There is a Cochlear Implant Clinic which is responsible for the assessment and pre-operative preparation of patients, the surgical procedure and the postoperative rehabilitation. This Unit now has 20 years experience and in the coming year will perform over 80 Cochlear Implants. In addition the Hospital has other Otolaryngology Clinics including Head and Neck Surgery, Sinus and Rhinology Clinic, Otology, Paediatric, Voice Clinic, Vestibular Clinic and is supported by an Anaesthetic Clinic, Pre Admission Clinic and Physician Clinics. The Hospital services the State of Victoria and receives referrals directly from Primary Care Doctors and other Hospitals as well as from Private Otolaryngologists. The Hospital has an active programme of research supported by external sources and its own funds. There are 3 Fellows in Otolaryngology, one in Head and Neck Surgery, one in Sinus and Rhinology and one in Otology. In addition the Hospital has 4 accredited Registrars and 2 non-accredited Registrars in training. In addition it receives 4th Year Registrars from the Victorian Advanced Training in General Practice Programme. Currently the Department of Otolaryngology Department sees almost 40,000 patient’s per annum and almost 15,000 Emergency attendances per annum. In addition well over 3,000 surgical cases per annum are completed at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. There is an Otolaryngology Section which meets regularly and represents the interests of Senior Otolaryngologists within the Hospital. There is a Professor of Otolaryngology, a Professor/Director of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, a Professor of Speech and Hearing Sciences, an Associate Professor of Otolaryngology and each Clinic has its own Head of Unit.
