ResearchHealing, teaching and research are indivisible at The Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital, combining to give the hospital a national and international reputation for excellence in eye, ear, nose and throat medicine. The hospital, a busy and dynamic independent state-wide health service, has been serving Victorians since 1863 and is one of only a dozen major stand-alone specialist eye and ear hospitals around the world. One of Victoria’s largest surgical hospitals, the hospital performs half of the State’s public general eye surgery and up to 90% of special eye surgery, as well as all of the Cochlear implants in Victoria. The hospital provides over 178,000 Outpatient and 44,000 Emergency occasions of service per year and admits over 12,000 people as inpatients. As such, the hospital offers a substantial base for clinical research. Important drivers behind the success of our research are the high level partnerships behind our endeavours. The hospital houses and is closely affiliated with the University of Melbourne Departments of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, as well as the Centre for Eye Research Australia (CERA), and is a partner in the East Melbourne Hearing Research Group, which includes the world renowned Bionic Ear Institute. Researchers therefore come together in an environment that promotes and supports research across all disciplines and specialties. It is not surprising then that the number of our research projects is increasing, with 120 human research projects and 26 animal research projects currently underway. Links
