Research
We are one of a handful of standalone Eye and Ear hospitals in the world. We see more than 182,000 outpatients and 47,000 emergency cases every year, and care for more than 13,000 inpatients. This means the Eye and Ear has a substantial base for clinical research.
Research is one of the cornerstones of our clinical success. Our clinical practice, teaching and research are inseparable. A critical factor in our research success is the strength of the relationships we have with partners such as University of Melbourne Departments of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, Centre for Eye Research Australia, the Hearing CRC and the Bionics Institute.
We currently support over 250 research projects. Research being conducted at the hospital is governed by a strict framework through which the hospital is accountable for the scientific quality, ethical acceptability and safety of the research.
