Research

The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital (the Eye and Ear) is Australia's only specialist stand-alone eye, ear, nose and throat hospital. The Eye and Ear is the largest public provider of ophthalmology and ENT services in Victoria and delivers more than half of Victoria's public eye surgery and all of Victoria's public cochlear implants. The majority of patients seen at the Eye and Ear are outpatients. Every year the Eye and Ear cares for over 250,000 patients, with more than 200,000 outpatients, 40,000 emergency patients and nearly 14,000 inpatients.

Research is one of the cornerstones of our clinical success. Our clinical practice, teaching and research are inseparable. A critical factor in our research success is the strength of the relationships we have with partners such as University of Melbourne Departments of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, Centre for Eye Research Australia, the Hearing CRC and the Bionics Institute.

The Eye and Ear is also partners with the Aikenhead Centre for Medical Discovery (ACMD), to help establish the first biomedical engineering research and education centre in Australia.

We currently support over 200 research projects. Research being conducted at the hospital is governed by a strict framework through which the hospital is accountable for the scientific quality, ethical acceptability and safety of the research.
