The Eye and Ear recognises volunteer contributions 7 December 2009
International Volunteer Day was celebrated globally on 5 December - an initiative of volunteer involving organisations and the United Nations.
At the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, volunteers support patients and staff to help combat blindness, and vision and hearing impairment.
The Eye and Ear Hospital CEO Ann Clark said this year volunteers provided 5500 hours and supported more than 8500 patients.
“The Eye and Ear recognises the contribution of volunteers, supports them with training and development so they can carry out their role safely and effectively, and celebrates their achievements and service milestones.”, said Ms Clark.
Volunteers have been active in the hospital and the community on behalf of the Eye and Ear for over 80 years.
This year, the Eye and Ear commenced a new volunteering program training 30 community members to offer concierge and patient support for patients and visitors arriving from all parts of Victoria, for eye and ear treatments at the hospital.
