New head of the Centre for Eye Research Australia will strengthen research and clinical ties 29 May 2009
The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear has welcomed the appointment of Professor Jonathan Crowston as the Managing Director of the hospital’s research partner, the Centre for Eye Research Australia.
Professor Crowston was appointed following an international search process and will take up the role from 1 June 2009.
Professor Crowston said one of CERA’s strengths is the close link between research and clinical practice.
“Regular patient contact means our research findings can be quickly and seamlessly translated into clinical practice. It’s what makes our partnership with the Eye and Ear so important and mutually rewarding.”
CEO of the Eye and Ear Ann Clark said the appointment is testament to strength of the research partnership between with CERA, based at the hospital.
“Professor Crowston is the head of the hospital’s Glaucoma Clinics and will continue to see patients and retain his clinical role at the Eye and Ear.”
“The Eye and Ear already has an international reputation for clinical leadership and world-class research with the ‘bionic ear’ or cochlear implant and we look forward to working with Professor Crowston and the team at CERA and to make an Australian bionic eye a reality.”
Professor Crowston will take over from Professor Tien Wong who has taken up an appointment as the Director of the Singapore Eye Research Institute.
