International conference tackles challenges of innovation in eye care

26 February 2010

The implications of the use of the bionic eye will be one of many issues explored as eye care specialists from all over the world meet at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne.

Eye hospital CEO’s and clinicians will gather at Eye and Ear for the Annual Meeting of the World Association of Eye Hospitals (WAEH).

From 28 February to 2 March, over forty delegates including experts and eye hospital CEO’s will present on the latest ways of how eye health care services are delivered and learn from their peers from Asia, Europe, USA and Australia.

Chief Executive Officer of The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital Ann Clark said the WAEH conference comes at an important juncture in the Eye and Ear’s future. It is a testimony to the Eye and Ear’s standing in the international eye health community that the Hospital was chosen as a host.

"In 2004 vision disorders cost Australia $9.85 billion. The cost is predicted to more than double by 2020. This conference tackles the challenges of innovation in eye care and we are honoured that Melbourne was chosen to host this meeting," Ann Clark said.

“This year’s discussions are completely in sync with the challenges that face the Eye and Ear as we move forward in the short term to plan for redevelopment and the excitement of the first implantation of the Bionic Eye anticipated in 2013.”

"Conferences such as this are crucial to share ideas and build collaborations with colleagues from around Australia and the World and we look forward to the exchange of knowledge with international leaders.”

"Melbourne is home to some of the world's finest eye specialist and the Eye and Ear is renowned globally for its national and international leadership role in eye health, treatment and research”

World leaders will deliver lectures on the “Challenges of Innovation in Eye Care” including:

• Bionic eye: what kind of implications has the use of the bionic eye?
• Innovations in healthcare processes: patient flows
• Renovations or rebuilding of eye hospitals world
