Partnerships
University of Melbourne
The Hospital partners the University in teaching and research through the
University Departments of
Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology
(both of which are housed on site), its School of Audiology and optometry teaching through its Science Faculty. Teaching and training facilities are
provided for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Centre for Eye Research
Australia (CERA)
The Hospital is a partner in CERA, which was established in 1996 as a centre
for excellence in eye research. CERA, based at the Hospital, is a joint
undertaking of the University of Melbourne, The Royal Victorian Eye & Ear
Hospital, the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists, the
Ansell Ophthalmology Foundation, the Lions Club of Victoria and Vision
Australia.
Bionic Ear Institute (BEI)
The BEI was established to provide funds for cochlear implant research, which
was initiated by the University of Melbourne Department of Otolaryngology. This
year is the 25th anniversary of the world’s first cochlear implant, which was
done at the Eye & Ear Hospital.
Cooperative Research
Centre for Cochlear Implant, Speech and Hearing Research
This centre, based in East Melbourne, conducts world-leading research into the
development of speech processing and communication aids for the hearing
impaired.
Human
Communication Research Centre
Also based in East Melbourne, this centre undertakes research into human
communication.
St Vincent’s Health
There is a long history of clinical cooperation between the Eye & Ear
Hospital and St Vincent’s. In 1997, St Vincent’s Health transferred its
ophthalmology services to the Eye & Ear Hospital. St Vincent’s Health
provides pathology services to the Hospital. Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute
Strong clinical cooperation exists between the two services, especially in work
with tumours.
LaTrobe University
The Hospital provides teaching and research facilities for undergraduate and postgraduate students from
the LaTrobe School of Orthoptics. The Hospital also contributes to the training of speech pathology and
medical record students. In addition, work has started on developing links and joint health promotion related
initiatives with the School of Public Health.
RMIT
The Hospital teaches and trains RMIT’s medical photography students.
Royal Australian and New Zealand College
of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) Together with RANZCO, the Hospital operates a
specialist medical research library, which is used by medical, nursing, allied health and administrative staff
within the Hospital, as well as ophthalmologists and orthoptists throughout Australia. In cooperation with
RANZCO, the Hospital also provides specialist postgraduate training for ophthalmology registrars.
Royal Australian College of Surgeons (RACS)
The Hospital provides specialist postgraduate training for otorhinolaryngology registrars in cooperation with
RACS. The Hospital library has facilities for otorhinolaryngologists and registrars.
WHO Collaborating Centre for the
Prevention of Blindness
The Hospital is involved in this centre via research and training in ophthalmology.
Lions Corneal Donation Service
The Hospital has an affiliation agreement with the Lions Corneal Donation Service, which sources and supplies
corneal tissue.
Victorian Eye Care Network
The Network provides spectacles to patients at reduced cost.
Royal Flying Doctor Service
Through the Royal Flying Doctor Service, the Hospital provides training updates for doctors and nurses in
remote areas.
Vision Australia
The Hospital has a long association with Vision Australia, which
provides low vision services to Eye & Ear Hospital patients (and the
broader community). Vision Australia provide services to people with a mild to significant
vision impairment. Services include rehabilitation, low vision assessment
clinics and living support services. Vision Australia’s presence in the
Hospital has increased awareness of the services available to vision impaired
patients.
Taralye
The Oral Language Centre Located in Blackburn, Taralye provides a range of
Audiology, Otology and language development programs primarily for infants and
children up to the age of six. The Hospital’s partnership with Taralye
includes a weekly outpatient clinic providing families living in the Eastern
region of Melbourne with an accessible audiology and otology clinic providing
child friendly care. Taralye also provides a specialist oral language
development and education program to infants who have received cochlear
implants. This not-for- profit organisation serves metropolitan Melbourne and
regional Victoria.
Vision 2020: The Right to
Sight Australia
Vision 2020 is an international body committed to the elimination of
preventable blindness and vision impairment. The Eye & Ear Hospital works
with its Australian arm, Vison 2020: The Right to Sight – Australia,
particularly on the Vision Initiative, a program to reduce vision impairment in
Victoria, which has been funded by the Victorian Government for an initial
three year period.
Guide Dogs Victoria (GDV)
The Hospital has been working with GDV to broaden staff knowledge on the
breadth of services it provides and increase appropriate referrals and
continuity of care. Beyond the provision of Guide Dogs for people with a
significant visual impairment, GDV also provides a variety of orientation and
mobility programs and education services.
VicDeaf A joint training initiative between the Hospital and VicDeaf enabled a
number of staff to learn Auslan (sign language), improving their capacity and
confidence communicating with ‘signing’ patients.
Better Hearing Australia (BHA)
BHA is a non-profit organisation providing direct and indirect services to
adults with a hearing impairment. BHA’s Hearing Friendly Hospitals program
provides a valuable framework on which the Hospital can base service
improvements. To date, BHA has assisted with the redesign of Hospital lifts,
provided representation on the Community Advisory Committee and provided a
number of valuable resources, including patient and professional referral
information.
General Practice Divisions
Victoria (GPDV)
The Hospital worked with GPDV to develop a Memorandum of Understanding
outlining a framework for future initiatives, particularly in relation to GP
education and improving referral processes. Other metropolitan and regional
hospitals The Hospital sends eye registrars to the Monash Medical Centre, the
Royal Children’s Hospital, the Royal Melbourne Hospital, the Northern
Hospital, the Alfred Hospital, the Western Hospital, Geelong Hospital, Ballarat
Base Hospital, Albury Base Hospital, and Austin Health. The Hospital shares
anaesthetic registrars with the Alfred Hospital and St Vincent’s Health and
shares medical registrars with St Vincent’s Health.
