Based at East Melbourne, the Hospital, primarily an ambulatory and elective
surgery centre, is one of Victoria’s largest hospitals in terms of patient
appointments. It undertakes half of the State’s public general eye surgery, up
to 90% of special eye surgery, and almost all of Victoria’s public cochlear
implant surgery. The Hospital also operates three satellite services: at Maroondah Hospital in Ringwood; at Broadmeadows Health Service – a division of Northern Health; and a paediatric hearing clinic at Taralye. The Hospital has strong affiliations with regional health services and its medical registrars undertake a rotation across Victoria. Through our association with the University of Melbourne Departments of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, both based in the Hospital, we are able to remain at the forefront of teaching and research in these specialty areas. We also work closely with the Centre for Eye Research Australia, the Bionic Ear Institute and the Human Communication Research Centre. |
