Community Advisory Committee
What is the Community Advisory Committee?
The Community Advisory Committee (CAC) is a sub-committee of the Eye & Ear
Hospital Board of Directors. The role of the CAC is to advise the Board on the
Hospital’s services, from a community perspective.
The CAC has a role is promoting community involvement in the hospital;
helping to communicate with our communities; advocating on behalf of communities
and in planning how services are developed and run.
The Eye & Ear Hospital aims to meet the needs of the communities we serve.
The CAC is an ideal way to achieve this, including the development and
monitoring of a strategic Community Participation Plan.
Community Advisory Committee Member Profile 2008
There are currently 12 members of the CAC, made up of 3 members of the Eye and Ear Hospital Board and 9 community representatives.
Mike Zafiropoulos Eye and Ear Board member and Chair of CAC. General Manager of SBS Melbourne. Extensive experience in the areas of community affairs, local government, education, arts and culture, and media.
Reg Shelley Academic at Monash University in teacher education. Foundation and existing member of CAC. Background in community development with Indigenous Australian communities; experience of rural issues.
Sue Healy Board member for the Council On The Ageing, national representative for the Consumer Health Forum. Skills in consumer representation in health, quality & safety. Knowledge of issues affecting older people.
Ann Polis Background in training, Trade Unions. Skills in consultation, adult education and stakeholder communication.
Ms Katerina Angelopoulos Eye and Ear Board member, Chair of Cultural Diversity Committee. President of the Moreland Community Health Service and recently appointed to the University of Notre Dame School of Medicine Advisory Committee. Experience in community health services, multicultural affairs and income security and skills in leadership and advocacy.
Mr Ian Pollerd Eye and Ear Board member, Director of his own health and community services consultancy business - Eureka Solutions and member of the Board of Governance UnitingCare Connections. Project management experience in rural health, disability services, aged care, palliative care and family and community services.

Mr Jonathan Mortimer Lawyer in Banking Sector. Has also worked as an economic policy adviser in the Prime Minister’s Department and Treasury portfolio, and in private legal practice. Interest in consumer protection and community activities.
Mr David Baber Senior Policy Adviser, Industrial Relations Victoria. Experience in human resources management, including planning, strategic development and change management, along with policy advice and development experience.
Mr Twanny Farrugia Proprietor of Pro-Ability Consultancy Service, providing education and support for people with disabilities, the aged, culturally and linguistically diverse groups and those facing loss and grief issues. Experience representing consumers on various community groups at Federal/State/Local government levels and not for profit sectors.
Mr Kevin Boyce Board Member for the Action for Community Living Melbourne, member of the Transport Accident Commission of Victoria (TAC) Disability Advisory Committee. Kevin was a Victoria Day Awards finalist in 2003 and is currently undertaking a Diploma in Tourism.
Ms Jenny Taing Lawyer with experience in strategic planning, policy development, consultation with stakeholders and has interest in consumer advocacy and public health.
