Diabetes – a global epidemic: do we have any solutions?
Associate Director of Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute, Associate Professor Jonathan Shaw presents the challenges in treating the diabetes epidemic The prevalence of diabetes is rising rapidly around the world and it is estimated by the year 2025, 380 million people will be afflicted with the condition. The consequences from complications, including eye disease are significant, but are we any closer to tackling this epidemic? In this Grand Round Lecture Associate Professor Jonathan Shaw will explore gains that are being made in the prevention of cardiovascular disease as a result of diabetes and the challenges in lifestyle management of type 2 diabetes. Associate Professor Shaw is currently the Deputy Director of the International Diabetes Institute and holds a post as Associate Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Epidemiology and Preventative Medicine at Melbourne’s Monash University. His research interests include the epidemiology of diabetes, diabetic complications, the metabolic syndrome and obesity and type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents. The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital’s Grand Round Series provides a forum for learning, discussion and dissemination of research. Presenters are acknowledged national and international leaders in their field. |
