Beyond the cochlea: merging bionics, hearing technologies and regeneration

Speaker/Host: Professor Stephen O’Leary M.B.,B.S., B.Med.Sc, Ph.D., F.R.A.C.S.

Location: Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, Surgeons' Gardens, Spring Street, Melbourne

Date: Monday, 30 June 2008

William Gibson Chair of Otolaryngology Professor Stephen O’Leary presents a vision for specialty ear, nose and throat (ENT) health – head and neck surgery

Explore the future of neuroscience, specialist surgery, research and bionics…

In his first public lecture as the William Gibson Chair of Otolaryngology at the University of Melbourne, Professor O’Leary will explore the merging of bionic and hearing aid technologies to improve sound quality for the hearing impaired, new treatments for balance disorders, improvements in cancer treatments through tissue protection and teaching surgery through virtual reality.

These ground breaking advances bring together partnerships across Victoria’s pre-eminent research and specialty health services, and are inspired by the first William Gibson Chair holder, Professor Graeme Clark, pioneer of the cochlear implant.

Professor O’Leary is an ENT surgeon and researcher at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital and the University of Melbourne. He is recognised world-wide for his contributions to auditory neuroscience, his research on the bionic ear and inner ear regeneration, protection and repair.
